Google Chrome is the most popular internet browser available today. Because of its simple user interface and its capabilities, many consider Chrome to be a memory hog. However, a feature called ‘hardware acceleration’ (hardware acceleration) can make Chrome fast.

By default, Chrome uses your device’s CPU and software to render any web page and content. But if you turn on the ‘hardware acceleration’ feature, the browser uses the device’s graphics to load the web page. It improves the browser’s performance.

You can turn on this feature especially when using web pages that require a lot of graphics or watching videos from the browser.

What is hardware acceleration feature?

In simple terms, hardware acceleration is a process that helps applications to perform certain computing tasks on certain hardware components within the system.

In doing so, the application is not only dependent on the CPU but also on other components. Then the application can run smoothly.

This feature requires the following procedure:

  • Open the Chrome browser. Click on the three dots at the top right.
  • Click on Settings and select the System tab.
  • On the new page that opens, there are some more options. Among them, click on ‘Use hardware acceleration when available’. Then relaunch Chrome.

Or you can check if this feature is on in the browser by typing chrome://gpu/ in the search bar. If the browser has the feature turned on, you can see ‘Hardware Acceleration’ in green in the ‘Graphic Feature Status’ section. But after turning on this feature, if you see a glitch in the browser, it is better to turn off this feature again.
